Encryption
Your messages are end-to-end encrypted with MLS, the modern IETF standard. Only you and your recipients can read them, nobody else, not even us.
How it works
Fernweh is built on MLS, Messaging Layer Security, the IETF standard (RFC 9420) for modern end-to-end encryption, including secure group messaging. Every message is encrypted on your device before it leaves, and only the recipients' devices hold the keys to decrypt it.
Unique Keys
Every conversation has its own unique encryption keys that only you and your recipients possess. With forward secrecy, keys keep evolving, so past messages stay protected.
Protected Everywhere
Messages and media are encrypted in transit and unreadable without the key. Each file is encrypted on its own, and your message history stays encrypted on your device.
An Open Standard
Built on MLS (IETF RFC 9420), an open, peer-reviewed standard for modern end-to-end encryption, including secure group messaging.
What this means for you
Complete Privacy
Your messages, media, and calls are yours alone. Our team and servers only ever handle encrypted data. We can't read your content.
No Backdoors
We don't build backdoors into our encryption. Period. Your security isn't negotiable.
On by Default, Always
End-to-end encryption is the foundation of every message and call, on by default and always on. You don't need to turn it on or configure anything.
